What are Transits?

Transits are the never-ending journeys of the planets around the zodiac. The planets as they move around make aspects to the natal positions of the planets and the house cusps and bring with them their own influences.

Notable Transits for December 2005

The Fixed Sign T-Square. A T-square is a planetary pattern of imbalance - it's appearance is that of a three-legged square table.This T-square involves Mars, Saturn and Jupiter and will be in effect from the end of November through December, 2005.This T-square is comprised of three individual transits. They are:

-- Mars squares Saturn. Mars comes into conflict with Saturn. Mars in Taurus first squares Saturn in Leo on July 31st, again on November 18th and for a third time on December 27th. The last two squares of Mars and Saturn are active parts of the T-square.

-- Mars opposes Jupiter. Mars first opposes Jupiter while still in cardinal signs on June 25th. Mars will be in Aries and Jupiter will be stationary in Libra. Mars opposes Jupiter for a second time on December 4th and then again on January 25, 2006.

-- Jupiter squares Saturn. Jupiter comes into its first exact square to Saturn on December 17th, again on June 22, 2006 and for a third and final time on October 25, 2006. This struggle is one of power. During the last part of November and December this square will form a T-square with Mars.

Forecasting the Future

Mercury Transits

Transits of Mercury can only occur in May or November.   The first transit of Mercury in the 21st century occurred in May 2003. The next is in November 2006 when the entire transit will be visible from New Zealand.

            Planet transit

 

Transits of Inner and Outer Planets

Inner planet transits--that is, transits of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars--are brief in duration and not as meaningful and significant as outer planet transits. Inner planet transits are significant if at the same time they are making their own aspects together and hitting on a point of the birthchart which has its own transits. A transit of two or more inner planets, hitting on one or more of the planets in a grand trine, acts like a trigger setting off the natal configuration.

Transits of the "heavy" outer planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,etc are very much more significant in that they spend more time hovering over a particular area of a chart. A transit of one of the outer planets doesn't necessarily have to hit a natal planet for its effect to be felt. A transit over one of the four angles of the chart is usually a major, possibly life-changing influence .

Venus Transit

During a transit of Venus, Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, and Venus appears as a small, dark dot crossing the bright disk of the Sun. Transits of Venus are very rare - two transits of Venus occur every 125 years. Transits of Venus occurred on June 8, 2004 and is due again on June 6, 2012. A transit of Venus lasts from 3 to 7 hours; the exact time depends on the path taken across the Sun.

Viewing a Transit

To be able to view a transit, binoculars or telescope is necessary as the black disk of the planet silhouetted against the Sun will be very small. For safety it is suggested the image of the Sun be projected onto a white card.

Safe viewing methods must be used, either by projecting the image of the Sun onto a suitable screen, or by using a suitable, specially designed, solar filter in front of the telescope.

Any attempt to view the Sun directly could result in instant blindness.  It is not safe to use a filter at the eyepiece as the focussed heat from the Sun could shatter it.

Conditions for a Transit

Transits of the two inner planets occur when the planet passes across the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth.  Therefore transits can only occur when an inner planet is at inferior conjunction with the Sun, that is the conjunction at which the planet is between the Earth and Sun.  However transits do not occur at each inferior conjunction - at most conjunctions the planet will pass either above or below the Sun. 
Transiting Jupiter influences us to expand and enlarge our world, including one's inner world. Transiting Uranus acts to disrupt, change, and redo whatever it touches.
Transiting Saturn helps us to take responsibility for ourselves. Saturn's effect is to crystallize, to ground, and to solidify. Transiting Neptune acts to dissolve boundaries, and to sensitize, spiritualize, and refine our lives.
